Visiting Tonga means not to expect the usual pleasure of tourism. But that’s not a disadvantage. The culture of Tonga is real.
In the shops, at the markets and at the entertainment venues. Wherever you're going you see and feel what the Tongans see and feel. Nothing is purposely put on for the tourists. It is just the way it is. Try an Òtai, a typical drink with coconut milk and pulped tropical fruit.
Nuku'alofa, the capital, is located on the main island of Tongatapu. It is more developed than its neighbours but still maintains an unhurried and peaceful lifestyle.
Tongans are staunched Christians. That's why almost everything - except a few restaurants and bakeries - is closed on Sundays.
Climate: The name Tonga means south. Further away from the equator than Samo or Fiji, Tonga has a more comfortable tropical climate.
It receives less rain than other tropical areas, and maximum temperatures average 80 F / 27 C with only moderate humidity.
